AmeriGel: Patient Instructions for Wound Care

Wound Cleaning: Use normal saline or saline irrigation. Pour over the wound, but do not scrub or rub aggressively. Gently blot dry before applying AmeriGel.

Applying AmeriGel: After wound has been cleansed, apply a thin coat of AmeriGel to the wound. Also apply some to the surrounding skin, extending beyond the wound edges.

Dressing the Wound: Moisten a gauze with saline. It should be damp, not dripping wet. Place this over the wound that has just been coated with AmeriGel. Cover this with a dry gauze and secure with tape or roll gauze.

Wound care Tips:

  1. Change dressing twice daily the first week and once daily Thereafter.

  2. If dressing sticks, loosen gently by soaking with saline.

  3. Don't use peroxide, iodine/betadine, or alcohol on a chronicwound.

  4. Some patients report burning or stinging with initial applications of AmeriGel. This is the antimicrobial action working on the wound.

  5. The wound may drain or appear deeper with the first few days of application. This is a good sign as long as BOTH are happening together. Generally, wounds healing from the inside out will be-come shallower. As the wound fills, new skin will begin to close over the wound.
