FAQs on Toenail Fungus:

Why might I get toenail fungus?

Like all fungal infections, toenail fungus occurs when a fungus begins to overgrow on your body, in this instance under the nail. If your shoes and socks are often sweaty and moist due to physical activity or other reasons, you may be at a higher risk of developing a fungal infection, as fungi thrive in warm, damp environments.

Are there different types of toenail fungus?

Fungal nail infections come in four primary types. These types are:

  • Distal subungual onychomycosis (DSO), the most common type, which infects the skin inside the nail and on the nail bed. DSO is caused by the same fungus that causes athlete’s foot.;
  • White superficial onychomycosis (WSO), the second most common type, which affects the top layer of your nail and causes a white, crumbling powder to appear.
  • Candida onychomycosis, which is a yeast infection that affects the nail and its bordering skin. These infections are more common in fingernails.
  • Proximal subungual onychomycosis (PSO), which thickens and separates the skin at the base of the nail and often leads to foot infection. This is more common in patients with HIV.

What is the best nail fungus treatment available?

As fungal nail infections can be stubborn and difficult to clear up, it’s best to consult a podiatry specialist when you spot symptoms. Your podiatrist will most likely recommend prescription antifungal medications such as Lamisil or Sporanox. We may also recommend medicated nail cream or polish to help eliminate the infection.
